My Hero Academia: Heroes Rising (Blu-ray) Unboxing

My Hero Academia: Heroes Rising (僕のヒーローアカデミア THE MOVIE ヒーローズ:ライジング, Boku no Hīrō Akademia Za Mūbī: Hīrōzu: Raijingu) is a 2019 theatrical anime film based on the manga of the same name written by Kōhei Horikoshi. The film was animated by studio Bones and directed by Kenji Nagasaki. TOHO published the film and was first theatrically released in Japan on December 2019 as part of the early Winter season.

Background:

“Even though All Might was admired by many all around the world, it was with a sad heart that he had to give up his hero role as the Symbol of Peace. Because of this, a dark force who was moving behind the scenes, a villain named Nine who can be considered the greatest villain thus far.”

Plot Synopsis via Manga Entertainment, October 2020

My Hero Academia continues to be one of the bigger anime franchises in recent years. With over four seasons and two films already made, the rollercoaster has not stopped. The manga, which is currently serialising in Weekly Shonen Jump with the likes of Black Clover, Chainsaw Man, Jujutsu Kaisen and One Piece, still continues to excite the fans of the series. As I have mentioned before with my Season 1 and Two Heroes unboxing posts, the franchise is essentially Japan’s take on superheroes like ONE has done with One Punch Man.

My Hero Academia: Heroes Rising is the second theatrical film for the anime series and this time it’s adapts the original conclusion of the manga source material which is pretty interesting, considering I haven’t heard of this idea being done before for anime in the past. Regardless studio Bones went all out with the animation especially during its latter half. I was lucky enough to be able to watch the film during its UK theatrical screening, though due to a technical issue with The Light cinema I missed out on the subtitles for the first 5-8 minutes.

My Hero Academia: Heroes Rising was licensed by Funimation for the US, Canada, UK & Ireland territories with the UK & Ireland distributed by Manga Entertainment. With its theatrical release in February 2020, the home video release came later in the year with a limited edition steelbook and a regular edition. As I have the other My Hero Academia Blu-rays in regular edition style, I decided to stick with consistency (though the Manga Entertainment designers didn’t take into consideration the consistency of the Blu-ray banner compared to how they handled Two Heroes).
